Organized by the University of Sarajevo – Institute for the Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law, a round table titled “Višegrad 1992–1995: Crimes, Consequences and Memorialization” will be held on May 20, 2026. The round table will take place in the premises of the Gazi Husrev-beg Library in Sarajevo, starting at 7:00 p.m.
The round table will bring together scholars and researchers who will speak about the crimes committed in Višegrad, their significance in the context of Greater Serbian ideology, the consequences of these crimes, as well as issues of memorialization and the danger of forgetting. Today, more than three decades later, the traces of these crimes are being erased through silence, denial, and the glorification of perpetrators. Before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other courts, numerous facts have been established regarding the monstrous crimes committed in Višegrad. The culmination of this criminal enterprise was the burning alive of Bosniak civilians in Pionirska Street and on Bikavac in June 1992.
A number of indictments have been filed for crimes committed in the Višegrad area during the 1992–1995 aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. So far, a total of 32 perpetrators have been finally convicted in 35 cases, receiving a combined sentence of 462 years in prison. Of that number, three were convicted before the Hague Tribunal. Many cases are still ongoing, while in some, first-instance verdicts have been issued.
