A program commemorating the 31st anniversary of the genocide against Bosniaks in and around Srebrenica in 1995 was held in Istanbul, organized by the Municipality of Bağcılar and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency – TİKA. Dr. Muamer Džananović, Director of the University of Sarajevo – Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law, also participated in the program.
As part of the academic segment of the program, Dr. Muamer Džananović spoke about the chronology of events in Srebrenica from 1992 until July 1995, with particular focus on the ideological, political, and other factors that led to the commission of genocide. In his address, the Director of the Institute emphasized the importance of scientifically established facts, international court judgments, and institutional culture of remembrance, as well as the need for continuous efforts to combat genocide denial, the relativization of crimes, and the distortion of historical facts. In his presentation, he also pointed out that the political structures of the Republic of Serbia and the Bosnian entity Republika Srpska have continuously denied the genocide in Srebrenica.
In addition to Dr. Muamer Džananović, the academic segment of the program also featured Prof. Dr. Enis Omerović, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Zenica, who addressed the legal aspects of the Srebrenica genocide and the importance of international justice in preserving the truth about the crimes committed.
The program was attended by representatives of the leadership of the Municipality of Bağcılar, as well as the Deputy President of TİKA, Dr. Yahya Coşkun. Representatives of victims’ associations, genocide survivors, activists, and journalists from Bosnia and Herzegovina also participated in the program.
The program also included presentations of content dedicated to the remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide, including the “Memory Corner” and a photo exhibition, which attracted significant interest from visitors. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of transmitting testimonies about the genocide to future generations, as well as the shared responsibility of institutions, the academic community, and society as a whole to preserve the truth about the genocide against Bosniaks in and around Srebrenica in 1995.
