The Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law in Sarajevo is a scientific research institution, a member of the University of Sarajevo, which deals with the research of crimes against peace, crimes of genocide and other serious violations of international humanitarian law from the historical, legal, sociological, criminological, economic, demographic, psychological, political, cultural, medical, ecological and other aspects of importance for the complete scientific investigation of the crime.
The main activity of the Institute is scientific research, within which, on the basis of the conceptualization of research and the development of scientific research projects, the realization of scientific research is organized, in which, by applying scientific methods, scientific knowledge is obtained in the function of developing the science of genocide and providing scientific cognitive basis for prosecuting perpetrators and perpetrators of crimes against humanity and international law.

The Institute was formed in September 1992 in extremely complex and difficult social, political, economic, military and security conditions, complex internal events and international relations. The aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the genocide against the Bosniaks are a special feature of the important internal events and international relations of the Institute's origin and development.

This scientific research institution is of special social, scientific, national and state importance for Bosnia and Herzegovina, for the victims of genocide and other forms of crimes against humanity and international law, not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but much wider, as well as (of importance) for the development of scientific knowledge about the most complex social phenomenon and its scientific usability and social expediency.

In its development so far, the Institute has achieved extremely significant scientific results and scientific-professional affirmation and respect in Europe and the world.
