MUAMER DŽANANOVIĆ PARTICIPATES IN THE GLOBAL RAPHAEL LEMKIN SEMINAR HELD IN POLAND

The Global Raphael Lemkin Seminar for Genocide Prevention was held from March 22 to 29, 2026, in Oświęcim and Kraków (Poland), gathering 21 participants from 17 countries around the world with the aim of exchanging knowledge and experience in the field of genocide prevention, mass atrocities, and violence. The seminar was organized by the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities in cooperation with the Auschwitz Memorial.

The program included expert lectures, study visits, and simulation exercises, with a special focus on identifying risk factors and developing effective response mechanisms. During the seminar, participants discussed forms of violence committed in different historical periods. Special attention was given to the Holocaust, as well as genocides committed after World War II, particularly in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Rwanda, as well as the most contemporary forms of conflict, violence, and genocide, including cases in Ukraine, Gaza, and other parts of the world.

Participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences from various sectors—from state institutions and civil society to the academic community—thereby further strengthening international cooperation and the network of experts dedicated to the prevention of genocide and other mass atrocities. During the seminar, participants also visited memorials and the sites of the former Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau camps.

One of the seminar participants was Dr. Muamer Džananović, Director of the Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law of the University of Sarajevo, who actively contributed to the seminar’s work. Dr. Džananović paid particular attention to the genocide and its denial in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His participation, as a representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina, contributes to strengthening the international visibility of research and institutional efforts of the Institute in the field of scientific research on crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the culture of remembrance, and the prevention of future crimes.
