The University of Sarajevo – Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law is organizing an international scientific conference titled “Crimes Against Children in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992–1995,” which will be held on November 20, 2026, in Sarajevo.
The selected date of the conference also carries symbolic significance. Namely, on November 20, 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international document recognizing the rights of children worldwide. This convention has been ratified by 196 countries, making it the most widely accepted international agreement in the field of human rights protection. Precisely in light of the universal principles of child protection, it is particularly important to highlight the grave and systematic violations of children’s rights in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the aggression from 1992 to 1995, which manifested in various forms, including killings, injuries, as well as long-term psychological and physical consequences and transgenerational trauma.
The aim of the conference is to provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary scientific analysis of crimes committed against children in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the period 1992–1995. Special focus will be placed on the scientific study of crimes against children through an interdisciplinary approach, encompassing historical, legal, sociological, psychological, and other analyses, along with the presentation of relevant facts and consideration of long-term social, legal, and psychosocial consequences.
Through the participation of scholars and researchers from various scientific fields, the conference aims to open space for well-argued academic discussion and to contribute to deepening existing knowledge, as well as to the systematization of research results in this field.
By organizing this conference, as well as through the planned publication of conference proceedings, the intention is to contribute to the further development of scientific thought, as well as to enhance the international visibility of research on crimes against children in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the context of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, as well as their consequences and memorialization.
