An international scientific conference titled “Sandžak Through the Centuries: Challenges of the Past and Perspectives for the Future” was held in Novi Pazar from May 10 to 12, 2026. It was organized by the Bosniak National Council in Serbia and the Bosniak Council in Montenegro.
The conference brought together more than 60 scholars, university professors, researchers, and experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Türkiye, North Macedonia, and other countries, who, through six thematic sessions, discussed historical, social, cultural, linguistic, and identity-related issues concerning Sandžak.
Representing the Institute for the Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law, University of Sarajevo, Dr. Muamer Džananović, Director of the Institute, and Dr. Zilha Mastalić Košuta, Senior Research Associate, took part in the conference. Together with other participants, they contributed to scholarly discussions on important historical and social topics.
Throughout the three-day program, numerous studies and academic papers were presented, with a particular focus on the preservation of cultural and historical heritage, contemporary social challenges, and perspectives for the future development of the Sandžak region.
