At the First Scientific Conference of PhD students of the University of Sarajevo titled “Reflections of Bosnian-Herzegovinian Statehood: Research Perspectives and Responses,” held on May 21, 2026, employees of the University of Sarajevo – Institute for the Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law also contributed to the conference’s work.
MA, LL.M. Lamija Muftić, Senior Associate at the Institute and PhD candidate at the Faculty of Law of the University of Sarajevo, participated as a presenter within the panel “Bosnia and Herzegovina in Search of New Perspectives.” She presented a paper titled “Dealing with the Past and Present in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Towards a Dialogical and Critical Approach,” in which she addressed the challenges of dealing with the past, as well as the need to develop a dialogical, argumentative, and critical approach to contemporary social and political issues in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dr. Sabina Subašić-Galijatović (Sabina Subašić-Galijatović), Senior Research Associate at the Institute, also contributed to the conference as a member of the Program Committee.
The conference “Reflections of Bosnian-Herzegovinian Statehood: Research Perspectives and Responses” brought together 37 PhD students of the University of Sarajevo, who presented their work over two days through nine thematic panels.
The conference was opened with welcoming remarks by Prof. Dr. Tarik Zaimović (Tarik Zaimović), Rector of the University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Sarina Bakić (Sarina Bakić), Chair of the Conference Program Committee, and Alija Jusović, President of the Student Parliament of the University of Sarajevo.
The program also included an opening lecture by Miro Lazović (Miro Lazović), titled “From March 1 to May 22, 1992 – The Path to Independence and Statehood,” in which he discussed the process leading to the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The conference provided a platform for presenting doctoral research from various academic fields, with a focus on reflections on Bosnian-Herzegovinian statehood, independence, contemporary challenges, and development perspectives through interdisciplinary scientific approaches.
The conference was organized by the Student Parliament of the University of Sarajevo, with the support of the University of Sarajevo, marking May 22 – the day of the admission of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the membership of the United Nations in 1992.
