31st ANNIVERSARY OF THE GENOCIDE AGAINST BOSNIAKS IN AND AROUND SREBRENICA

Today marks the 31st anniversary of the genocide against Bosniaks in the United Nations-designated “safe area” of Srebrenica.

At the Srebrenica Memorial Center – Potočari, a collective funeral prayer will be held and the remains of ten genocide victims will be buried. The youngest victim to be buried this year is Senad (Zaim) Jusić, born in 1975. The oldest victim is Ramo (Mustafa) Dautović, born in 1939. Alongside them, the remains of Muriz (Ramiz) Baraković, born in 1973; Hamed (Edhem) Musić, born in 1973; Ramo (Šemso) Alić, born in 1965; Muhidin (Osman) Osmanović, born in 1963; Huso (Rahman) Ćerimović, born in 1963; Nuko (Suljo) Nukić, born in 1957; Ahmet (Alija) Gušter, born in 1954; and Asim (Omer) Kunić, born in 1953, will also be buried.

Their remains were recovered from mass graves. Following the mass killings committed by the military and police forces of the self-proclaimed Republika Srpska, with the participation of units of the State Security Service of Serbia and other formations, the remains of victims of the genocide against Bosniaks were systematically disturbed and relocated from primary to secondary and tertiary mass graves in order to conceal traces of the crimes committed and hinder the identification process. Civil authorities and bureaucratic structures of the self-proclaimed Serbian municipalities in the Lower Podrinje region also participated in this segment of the genocidal process.

On 23 May 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution declaring 11 July as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.
