As part of the course Professional Practice 6 in the third year of the Security Studies programme, a group of students visited the Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law at the University of Sarajevo on 22 May 2026.
During the visit, the students had the opportunity to learn about the work of this unique research institution, which for decades has brought together interdisciplinary experts from a wide range of fields. They were also introduced to the history and development of the Institute, which since its establishment has served as a leading institution for the systematic documentation and research of crimes committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The students toured part of the Institute's extensive archival and library collections, which constitute an invaluable resource for researchers working on crimes against peace, the crime of genocide, and other serious violations of international law. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of archival documentation as a primary source for contemporary scholarly research.
A highlight of the visit was an interactive discussion with Dr. Ermin Kuka, Scientific Adviser, and Dr. Zilha Mastalić Košuta, Senior Research Associate. They shared their extensive research experience with the students, presented ongoing research projects, and discussed the challenges of working with archival materials and applying them in empirical research.
This exchange provided the students with valuable insights into methodological approaches to primary sources and contemporary methods for analysing sensitive data. Accompanied by Assistant Professor Kenan Hodžić, PhD, the students gained first-hand insight into the organisational structure and activities of this unique scientific institution. The visit also encouraged them to further develop their own research interests and academic competencies, with particular emphasis on research ethics and social responsibility.
