The University of Sarajevo – Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law and the Bosniak Institute – Adil Zulfikarpašić Foundation are organising the international scientific conference entitled “Srebrenica 1995: The Culmination of Genocide and Aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, which will take place on 3 and 4 July 2026 in Sarajevo and Srebrenica.
The conference is being organised to mark the 31st anniversary of the genocide against Bosniaks in and around Srebrenica, with the aim of paying tribute to the victims, reaffirming the importance of truth and justice, and strengthening scientific, institutional, and societal efforts aimed at researching, documenting, and countering genocide denial. Starting from the fact that the Srebrenica genocide has been scientifically, historically, and judicially established, the conference will provide a platform for interdisciplinary discussion on the political, military, legal, social, educational, and memorial aspects of the genocide committed in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995.
The scientific programme of the conference will be held on Friday, 3 July 2026, at the premises of the Bosniak Institute – Adil Zulfikarpašić Foundation in Sarajevo, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The conference programme includes four thematic panels: “Genocide before Law, Politics and Language: Definition, Prevention and Responsibility,” “Srebrenica after Genocide: Reconstruction, Remembrance, International Failure and Justice,” “The Road to the Srebrenica Genocide: Patterns of Persecution, Mass Crimes and Destruction in Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992–1995,” and “Education, Genocide Denial and Resistance through Truth.” The conference will bring together prominent domestic and international scholars, researchers, and experts.
On the second day of the conference, Saturday, 4 July 2026, a field programme will be organised in Srebrenica and Potočari. It will include visits to locations of mass killing sites in the Podrinje region, a visit to Potočari and the Srebrenica Memorial Center, and the closing of the conference programme in Srebrenica.
The organisers emphasise that continued scientific research, public discourse, and institutional remembrance regarding the genocide in Srebrenica represent a lasting obligation of the academic community, particularly at a time when denial, relativisation, and the glorification of perpetrators of crimes remain present in the public sphere. The conference therefore represents an important contribution to preserving judicially established facts, fostering a culture of remembrance, and maintaining a responsible approach towards the victims of genocide.
