INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE “CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN IN THE REPUBLIC OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA 1992–1995” TO BE HELD IN SARAJEVO ON 20 NOVEMBER 2026

The Institute for Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law of the University of Sarajevo is organizing the International Scientific Conference “Crimes against Children in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina 1992–1995”, which will be held on 20 November 2026 at the premises of the Rectorate of the University of Sarajevo.

The conference will focus on presenting the findings of scientific research into crimes committed against children during the aggression against the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period 1992–1995, with particular emphasis on the historical context, circumstances, and methods of their commission. It will bring together 24 scholars and researchers, as well as representatives of institutions and organizations dedicated to preserving collective memory and protecting victims’ rights. The academic presentations and panels will address crimes against children committed in, among other places, Sarajevo, Srebrenica, Prijedor and other municipalities in the Bosnian Krajina region, Mostar, Ahmići, Vareš, Maglaj, Tešanj, Zavidovići, Vlasenica, Zvornik, Rogatica, Goražde, Višegrad, Stolac, Jajce, and Šipovo. These discussions will be complemented by presentations on the transgenerational transmission of trauma, the protection of children under international law, and the realization of victims’ rights.

A special part of the programme will consist of panels dedicated to testimonies and discussions with survivors, including individuals who experienced various forms of crimes as children and who are now actively advocating for the realization of the rights of victims and their families. Through these discussions, the Institute aims to provide a platform for survivors to share their experiences, highlight the challenges they continue to face, and support their activities and initiatives directed towards the competent institutions, with the aim of ensuring the realization of their rights, adequate support, and the preservation of victims’ dignity.

The Institute plans to publish a conference proceedings volume to ensure that the research and academic findings presented at the conference remain permanently accessible to the academic community, the wider public, and future generations.

The detailed programme and further information will be announced at a later date. The conference is open to all interested members of the public.
