EXHIBITION “CRIMES AT MARKALE: KILLING AND WOUNDING OF CIVILIANS – PROSECUTION OF PERPETRATORS, DENIAL OF TRUTH, RESISTANCE TO FORGETTING” OPENED AT THE BOSNIAN CULTURAL CENTRE

The exhibition of the Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law of the University of Sarajevo, titled “CRIMES AT MARKALE: Killing and Wounding of Civilians – Prosecution of Perpetrators, Denial of Truth, Resistance to Forgetting,” has been opened to the public today, 6 February, at the Bosnian Cultural Centre, where it will remain on display for the next ten days.

The exhibition provides an overview of the siege of Sarajevo (1992–1996) and offers detailed documentation of the two massacres at the Markale marketplace: on 5 February 1994, when 68 civilians were killed, and on 28 August 1995, when 43 civilians were killed and more than 80 people wounded.

The materials presented as part of the exhibition include expert reports, UNPROFOR documents, verdicts of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), media reports, as well as extensive photographic and video documentation. The exhibition carries particular weight due to the display of photographs of all victims killed in both massacres, along with a list of those wounded.

The exhibition also addresses those responsible for the crimes at Markale, emphasizing the devastating fact that, before the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, no one has yet been held accountable for these crimes, nor for many other crimes committed in Sarajevo during the siege.

The authors of the exhibition — Dr. Muamer Džananović, Director of the Institute, Dr. Merisa Karović-Babić, and Mr. Sead Muhić — also reflect on the NATO intervention “Deliberate Force,” carried out two days after the 1995 massacre, and conclude the exhibition with an analysis of institutional revisionism, present from the time the crimes were committed to the present day.

The opening of the exhibition offers an opportunity for the citizens of Sarajevo, representatives of educational institutions, and the wider public to directly grasp the scale of crimes committed in the capital of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to pay tribute to the victims and their families. The exhibition is dedicated to all victims of the siege of Sarajevo, to future generations, and to educational institutions, with the aim of preserving the truth and resisting forgetting.
